What are muscle chains and why are they so important?

The whole body is connected by tissue and fascia. Therefore, a lower limb injury can be connected to the upper limb. And injuries are almost always connected to the core. Each movement originates from the core so you need to have a stable foundation. Each chain has to work correctly otherwise other parts of the body have to pick up the slack.

This is how injuries occur. Unless they are traumatic, or you know the mechanism of injury, then injuries develop gradually from an imbalance in the body. It’s our job to identify what isn’t working correctly and how to fix it. We can treat people’s pain but the key is to find out the causation to prevent injuries returning. .We can assess what isn’t functioning by testing the chains of the body. This identifies what is weak and gives us an idea as to what needs treatment. After treatment, if the chain gets stronger then we know this was the causation.

If the reassessment doesn’t increase the strength of the chain, then it identifies that something else needs treatment. We implement the change in clinic but it’s up to you to keep the change with the exercises that we prescribe. If we could treat you daily we would. But that is not practical or affordable.

This is why home rehab is important as it keeps treatment up in your own time. If you have an injury that needs looking at, please get in touch.
